Having bought
the fabulous beetle 977 TKL in 1964 and then driven around the South East of the
UK - I decided to branch out a bit.
What was to stop me driving....anywhere?? Certainly in Western
Europe virtually nothing except time and money. Elsewhere there may be Visa
problems, but nothing drastic. Albania was off-limits though! And so the idea
hatched - to drive the coast of the Mediterranean - from Gibraltar all the way
round - back to Tangier.
It was a good plan..... but I didn't make it!! Part of the
reason was having only 2 or 3 or 4 weeks vacation - and having to start from the
UK each time. This meant at least two full day's driving just to get to and from
the nearest bit of the Mediterranean coast. Anyway I gave it a good go and here
are the maps to prove it - These enlarge pretty big
The Plan as executed -
Gibraltar to Eastern Greece.
From the UK - and before/during all this "Med"
stuff - there were the Scotland Holiday, the Wales and West Country trips...
spreading out across France and Germany etc...
First holiday (1965) with Peter Eagles - Spain.
The bit between Northern Spain and Marseilles has now been
driven - in July 1991 when Brian & Vonney (with Andrea and ??) went on to our
villa in Spain - and I took Brittsy, Inga and Tabitha to the Bassy's in Monte
Carlo - and then (after a breakdown) I drove round that bit to the villa.
then came Italian and Yugoslavian and Greek
holidays
Turkey, Israel and North Africa - just too far....
